Discover (EYFS & Key Stage 1) Pathway

At Stanton Vale, our aim is to ensure that every child accesses a rich, relevant, and well-planned provision that enables each individual to flourish. Our curriculum is designed to provide children with the confidence, skills, and knowledge necessary to leave Discover Provision as individuals ready for the challenges and opportunities that await them on their future school Pathway. All children in Discover follow our Early Years curriculum, understanding that some will remain in Discover until Year 2.

Discover provides a tailored curriculum that is personalised and unique to every child, depending on their individual needs. The Discover curriculum follows the Differentiated Early Years Outcomes (DEYO), utilising various frameworks, including the Statutory Framework for the EYFS 2001 (Birth to 5), the Autism Education Trust framework, and smaller steps that ensure the progress of all children, regardless of need, can be recognised. In the Discover Provision, we also use each child’s Educational Health and Care Plan (EHCP) to inform our targeted learning against their Individual Learning Plan (ILP) targets.

Our curriculum is delivered through adapted adult-led tasks and child-initiated learning, enabling children to follow their own interests where possible within a stimulating and carefully structured, yet flexible, indoor and outdoor provision covering the following seven areas of the EYFS curriculum:

Prime Areas:

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social, and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development

Specific Areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Our children will experience two transitions while in the Discover Provision: their arrival at Stanton Vale and their move to a Pathway class in school. Transitions into school are personalised to suit the individual needs of each child and their family. Arrangements include a visit by the class lead to the child’s current placement and a home visit. Parents are offered a school tour and a ‘play and stay’ session with their child before the transition into education begins. This process allows for discussions around the child, their needs, and the parents’ wishes.

The second transition is from Discover Provision to one of Stanton Vale’s four Pathways (Support, Explore, Nurture, Aspire). This transition starts in Key Stage 1 (KS1), where we determine the appropriate Pathway for each child through discussions with curriculum managers, parents, and professionals, along with assessments and progress evidence. By the time Discover children transition into the next curriculum Pathway, they will have achieved their full potential in EYFS and be fully prepared for the next steps. They will possess the skills, knowledge, communication, and confidence needed for future learning.
